Vintage vs New Moroccan Rugs: What’s the Difference?

At Rohi Threads, we’re passionate about connecting people with truly handmade Moroccan rugs, whether they’re vintage pieces full of history or freshly woven treasures straight from the loom. While majority of our rugs are made using 100% wool and traditional techniques, vintage and new rugs each bring something special to your home.

Here’s what sets them apart:

Vintage Moroccan Rugs

Woven with Time: Vintage rugs are usually 20–60 years old, handcrafted by Amazigh (Berber) women in rural Morocco. Each one carries the imprint of its maker and the story of the home it once belonged to.

Naturally Aged Beauty: You’ll notice softened wool, faded tones, and natural signs of wear. These are not flaws, they’re the features that give vintage rugs their character and charm.

One-of-a-Kind: Every vintage rug in our collection is completely unique. The patterns, colours, and textures can’t be replicated.

Sustainable & Intentional: Choosing vintage is a low-waste, conscious choice making it ideal for those wanting to decorate with care and intention.

New Moroccan Rugs

Fresh from the Loom: Our new rugs are handwoven by artisans in Morocco using the same age-old techniques and high-quality wool.

Tailored to Your Space: New rugs offer more variety in size, colour, and design therefore making it easier to find the perfect fit for your space.

Soft, Plush & Clean: Expect a thicker pile and vibrant colours, with a fresh, cosy feel underfoot.

Ethical & Transparent: We work directly with our artisan partners and cooperatives to ensure fair pay, safe working conditions, and the continuation of traditional weaving practices.

So, Which One’s Right for You?

If you’re drawn to pieces with story, soul, and a sense of history—go vintage. If you want something custom-friendly, and freshly woven, choose to go new. Either way, every rug at Rohi Threads is handmade and chosen with care
