Rug Hunting in Morocco: What We Look For and Why
There’s something magical about stepping into a sun-drenched souk in Morocco, where the walls are lined with colour, texture, and stories woven into every rug. At Rohi Threads, rug hunting isn’t just about finding beautiful pieces — it’s about honouring craftsmanship, culture, and the feeling a rug brings into a home.
So, what exactly are we looking for when we’re treasure-hunting through Morocco’s hidden corners?
1. Authenticity First
Every rug we source is handwoven by Moroccan artisans. No machine-made copies, no mass production. We work directly with local weavers and families who’ve passed these techniques down through generations. This ensures every rug is not only unique, but deeply rooted in Moroccan tradition.
Why it matters: Authentic Moroccan rugs carry soul. They’re imperfectly perfect, with quirks that can’t be factory-made. That’s what makes them heirloom-worthy.
2. Natural Fibres Only
We only source rugs made from 100% wool, cotton, or cactus silk. No polyester blends here. Natural fibres mean better quality, durability, and sustainability. Some of our vintage rugs also have tassels and fringing made from goat hair, which adds to the beauty.
Why it matters: Wool is naturally stain-resistant, insulating, and long-lasting, making it perfect for Australian and New Zealand homes where we want both beauty and function.
3. Unique Colours & Symbolism
We’re drawn to rugs with colour palettes that feel bold but balanced, such as vintage reds, sunset oranges and seafoam greens. Many rugs use plant-based dyes, and the symbols woven in often represent love, protection, fertility, or freedom.
Why it matters: A Moroccan rug isn’t just decor, it’s a visual story. Each pattern carries a meaning, and we love sharing that story with you.
4. The Vibe Test
Okay, this one’s not technical — but it’s real. Some rugs just feel special. Maybe it’s the way they catch the light, or how soft the pile feels underfoot. When a rug gives us that full-body yes, it comes home with us.
Why it matters: Your rug should spark joy (yes, Marie Kondo was onto something). We only choose pieces that we’d want in our own homes.
Why We Go the Extra Mile (Literally)
We source rugs from Marrakech, the High Atlas mountains, and even tiny villages that don’t show up on Google Maps. It takes time, patience, and a lot of mint tea but we absolutely love the journey.
Every rug has been handpicked with care, cleaned, restored if needed, and loved into its next chapter. That’s the ROHI difference.
