Caring for Your Moroccan Wool Rug: A Complete Guide by Rohi Threads
At Rohi Threads, our rugs are handwoven in Morocco using 100% pure wool and traditional techniques passed down through generations. Each rug is unique, full of texture, character, and the story of the artisan who made it.
Whether you’ve just unrolled your rug or had it for years, this guide walks you through how to care for your Moroccan rug so it remains a treasured piece in your home for years to come.
Spot Cleaning Wool Rugs
Wool is naturally stain-resistant, but the key is to act fast.
Here’s how to handle spills:
- Blot, don’t rub: Gently blot with a clean, neutral-coloured cloth or paper towel to soak up the spill. Rubbing can damage the fibres or push the stain deeper.
- Use a mild solution: Mix warm water with a drop of gentle dish soap or white vinegar.
- Dab gently with a damp cloth — no scrubbing.
- Dry fully: Blot with a dry towel and let the rug air dry. If possible, hang it outside in filtered sunlight.
Rohi Tip: Sprinkle a little baking soda on the area before blotting to absorb moisture and reduce odour.
Vacuuming Moroccan Rugs
Routine vacuuming keeps your rug looking fresh and free of debris:
- Use a suction-only vacuum — no rotating brushes.
- For flat-weave rugs (like Boujad or Kilim), vacuum gently in the direction of the weave.
- For high-pile rugs (like Beni Ourain), vacuum less frequently or shake the rug outdoors to fluff and refresh.
- Expect some light shedding with new rugs — this will reduce with time.
Rotate Regularly
Rotate your rug every 2–3 months to:
- Prevent uneven fading (especially in sunny areas)
- Distribute wear more evenly
- Help furniture indentations ease out over time
Let It Breathe
Twice a year, give your rug a reset by letting it air out:
- Shake it gently to remove dust
- Hang over a railing or line for a few hours in the morning or late afternoon sun
- Sunlight naturally deodorises and refreshes the wool fibres
Preventing Moths
Wool is natural — and moths like it too. But you can easily prevent damage:
- Vacuum under and behind your rug now and then
- If storing, roll (don’t fold) and wrap in breathable cotton (avoid plastic)
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Add natural moth repellents like cedar wood or dried lavender
Deep Cleaning
For big spills, pet messes, or just an occasional refresh:
- We recommend professional cleaning every 1–2 years
- Use a cleaner who specialises in wool or handmade rugs
- Avoid steam cleaners and harsh shampoos as they can weaken fibres and strip the natural lanolin from the wool
